Case Study: MAN Impact Accelerator

In 2017, Joachim Drees, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus, approached Yunus Social Business to create an inspiring experience for social business entrepreneurs around the world. Together, we created the MAN Impact Accelerator to scale social ventures in transport and logistics.

During the first edition of this program, this included companies like Commut, providing save and affordable transport to women in India, Crowdcontainer, connecting smallholder farmers to global markets or Mellowcabs, providing affordable e-mobility solutions in South Africa. 

The program takes the entrepreneurs on an exciting journey through five ecosystems in Europe, India, South Africa and California over the period of 8 months.

Our Impact

The eight-month program was designed to scale the social businesses – both in terms of impact as well as financial sustainability. Here are our key success criteria:

MAN Impact Accelerator Startup Mentoring Program

The program heavily relies on mentoring support from over 150 mentors that provided their expertise for the startups. We generally refrain from providing keynotes or workshops in favor of 1-on-1 mentoring support for each startup to provide a customized experience. We are incredibly greatful to all mentors that donated their time and focus to this first edition.

Feedback from our Mentors

In order to assess the efficiency of our approach to mentoring, we ask both the startups and the mentors for feedback about their experience. Here are the results (on a scale from 1 – 6 with 6 being the best score).

Feedback from Our Startups

Feedback from startups was overwhelming. All of them recognized this program for the selfless act that it is. They were incredibly thankful for the support received during the program. A perfect Net Promoter Score of 100 reflects this gratefulness.

Startups specifically rated the support from mentors (both from MAN as well as from external mentors) as specifically helpful. Startups rated the quality of mentors as 9 out of 10 on average. But also the international travel scored high on the list of important elements for the program since it helped startups to broaden their horizons.

By far the most useful module was the purpose and team alignment module in the first week of the program which helped them to get clarity on their mission. All startups rated this module as “Absolutely Helpful”.
